Nicole Schaefer
Award-Winning Attorney and CEO of Yellow Dog Legal
Hi! I'm Nicole. I'm the lead attorney at Yellow Dog Legal, a virtual firm offering boutique trademark services without the boutique prices. I am the go-to expert for local entrepreneurs seeking information and help with all of their trademark needs. I love doing trademarks and helping my clients protect their businesses and brands.
I graduated from Lewis and Clark Law School with Certificates in Animal Law and Criminal Law and Procedure. I still practice Animal Law, as I am deeply passionate about animals, but I also love trademarks and everything having to do with them!
In my spare time, I enjoy watercolor painting (and actually send my clients a hand-painted card with their Trademark Certificates), exercising, watching movies ( especially scary ones), trying out ciders around Portland, and playing with my three dogs and my three cats.
You can check out my website at yellowdoglegal.com and my website devoted to those in the cider industry at theciderlawyer.com.
I can't wait to help you with your intellectual property and business needs!

- Q. I bought a dog from a breeder that has a genetic problem that caused me to put it down.
- A: Did the breeder guarantee the dog's health or anything like that? You may have recourse but it depends on the particular facts in your situation. I would consult with an attorney.
- Q. can I trademark an IP without a business license or deciding on a business name ?
- A: Hi! You can definitely trademark your character name, even without a business license or a business name. I would recommend consulting with an attorney to make sure that is the right action for your situation, but having a business name and license are not necessary for trademarking something like that.
- Q. My question is about avoiding violating a third-party trademark.
- A: If Tower has the trademark, it doesn't matter that it was dead. They own it now. You could try to get them to share the trademark with you. I would definitely consult a lawyer. Good luck!
