I've been practicing family law for over 30 years and have guided many, many families through this process. Yes, its a difficult road, but please know that the destination (as a therapist testifying once said)... is healing. A good lawyer is like a sherpa, able to guide and protect you through the sometimes treacherous slopes of the family law courts. When looking for a lawyer, find one who genuinely cares about protecting people... their hearts, their finances and their families. As Mahatma Ghandi (a lawyer himself) said, "I had learnt the true practice of law. I had learnt to find out the better side of human nature and to enter people's hearts. I realized the true function of a lawyer was to unite parties riven asunder." Nowhere is the implementation of Ghandi's ideals more necessary than in the area of family law.

I understood a long time ago, that "uniting hearts riven asunder" doesn't mean that the hearts/parties will get back together and make their marriage or relationship work. I learned that by the time people are sitting in my office, they've usually tried almost everything and divorce is their only remaining option. Yet, when guided properly, there is almost always something that both sides can find to agree to "join hearts" over... often the children. Joining hearts doesn't necessarily mean agreeing on what is best in the situation, if you agreed, you might not need a lawyer, but keeping the heart/space open and finding some goal to "unite" over will carry you a long way toward resolution of your case and toward the ultimate goal of healing. A good family law attorney can speed the healing process while a "bad" or greedy lawyer can certainly prolong it and add to the suffering. Finding the right person to counsel and guide you, like in so many areas of life, can make all the difference in the world.
