Biography

I have experience in both state and federal court, both in and outside of Alabama and have focused my practice on Appellate Litigation, Civil Rights, and Criminal Defense. Prior to founding Maxwell Tillman, I was a senior civil rights and criminal defense trial lawyer at one of Birmingham's top criminal defense firms. I also worked as a Fellow with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) where I assisted EJI in all areas of Appellate Litigation.

Leroy has focused his practice on Appellate Litigation and Criminal Law. Prior to joining the firm Leroy worked as a Fellow with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), based in Montgomery, Alabama, where he assisted EJI in all areas of Appellate Litigation. In addition, Leroy provided legal assistance to the poor and addressed problems caused by unfair criminal justice policies through education, community outreach efforts, litigation, and policy reform. Recently, Leroy was an instrumental member of the legal team who won two landmark United States Supreme Court victories in Jackson v. Hobbs and Miller v. Alabama. Leroy has experience in both state and federal court, both in and outside of Alabama. He received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law. While in law school, Leroy was a member of the International Moot Court Honor Society and an executive board member of the Black Law Students Association. Outside of work, Leroy enjoys watching Alabama football, spending time with his family, and spending time with his dog.
