Claudia Hurtado-Myers brings over two decades of experience working with diverse populations, helping them address their most pressing, violent, and complex needs, ranging from recovery of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, refugee resettlement, asylum representation, protecting abused, abandoned, and neglected children to services for human trafficking victims. Claudia also has an extensive background in family law, has litigated hundreds of cases in court, and is known among her peers as someone who will reach a negation for the child’s best interest. Claudia believes the court system should not be used against a parent in retaliation but instead, find a solution to benefit the children involved.
Claudia has extensive experience building coalitions to educate the public and judicial system on the plight of marginalized crime victims in the United States and abroad. She conducts “know your rights” presentations and discusses victim-based immigration relief for the community and other professional stakeholders.
Along with community outreach, Claudia regularly does pro bono work. She was a pro bono volunteer attorney for the family detention facility in Artesia, New Mexico. She and other attorneys involved in the project were recognized by receiving the Oregon AILA Pro Bono Award for 2015 and the 2015 AILA Michael Maggio Pro Bono Award. Before COVID, Claudia volunteered in the domestic violence court every month, both in obtaining Domestic Violence Protection Orders for victims and helping families navigate custody issues after a protection order was issued.
Claudia was the Senior Staff Attorney for the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants in North Carolina. She supervised all legal work, advocating for protecting unaccompanied children locally and nationally and engaging in impact litigation.
