Matt was the oldest of five boys raised in rural West Virginia. He attended college at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, before starting a family and enlisting in the United States Army. He served for ten years on active duty in the 101st Airborne Division and deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was awarded a Bronze Star in recognition of his meritorious service in combat.
