Thomas Hudson
Board-Certified DUI Specialist. Faculty, Natl College for DUI Defense, Author
Tom Hudson's only focus is DUI defense. He is a board-certified specialist in DUI Defense, one of only four lawyers in Florida with that designation. He is nationally known as an expert in DUI law, and has lectured to other lawyers, paralegals and laymen for over twenty years. In July, 2019, he was a featured speaker at the Summer Session of the National College for DUI Defense, held at Harvard Law School
Tom now limits his practice to DUI defense and teaching DUI defense to other lawyers. However, he previously also practiced as a personal injury lawyer. He is a member of the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum, a group restricted to lawyers who have attained success in major civil litigation.

- Q. How long is probation for a DUI?
- A: A simple first-offense DUI cannot result in a period of probation in excess of twelve months, since that is the maximum allowed by the statute [316.193(6)(a)].
- Q. I just got my license back after a DUI charge.
- A: Unless you have an extraordinarily bad driving record, it is highly unlikely that a judge would suspend your license for a mere 'careless driving' charge. If you were driving more than 30 mph over the speed limit, you could be convicted of Reckless Driving, which could result in a judge suspending your license. However, for a run-of-the-mill accident, that would be unlikely.
- Q. Convicted of DUI on 9/11/15. Order of Disqualification states that my license will be disqualified on 11/23/15?
- A: If your notice used the word "disqualification," then it refers to your Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Your non-commercial license suspension is referred to as a "revocation," and goes for either six or twelve months from your date of sentencing.
Be careful, because a second DUI conviction in a LIFETIME, will result in a lifetime disqualification from you ever holding a CDL again!
