Biography

Scott A. Makuakane has been practicing law in the areas of estate planning, trust and estate administration, asset protection, estate and gift taxation, and probate since 1983.
 
Mr. Makuakane has written various training manuals and articles for lawyers concerning estate planning, including authoring the Estate Planning Checklist and Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax chapters of the Hawaii State Bar Association’s Encyclopedia of Estate Planning. Mr. Makuakane is also a regular contributor to Generations Magazine, a Hawaii-based publication that shares important information and tips for seniors. His column focuses on estate planning issues and is written in an easy to digest non-legalese style.  
 
Scott Makuakane’s book, Est8Planning for Geniuses centers around the 8 Portals of Est8Planning--the critical steps to create, refine and keep an est8plan current and effective so assets are protected for future generations.  Mr. Makuakane breaks down complex and serious topics with disarming wit and humor. 
 
Mr. Makuakane earned his J.D. from the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii and his A.B. from Duke University. He is admitted to practice in all Hawaii courts, as well as the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii, the U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court.  He has served as president of the Probate & Estate Planning Section and the Senior Counsel Division, as well as the Estate & Gift Tax Committee, of the Hawaii State Bar Association.  He is also past-President of the Christian Legal Society, the Financial Planning Association of Hawaii, and the Board of Trustees of the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Honolulu.
 
Mr. Makuakane is recognized by the Chambers High Net Worth Guide in the practice area of Private Wealth law, and was selected to the Best Lawyers® list in the practice area of Trust & Estates Litigation. Since 1993, he has been rated AV Preeminent®, Martindale-Hubbell’s® highest professional rating.
