
Michael Black
Mike is a member of the Firm’s litigation group, working with clients to resolve disputes from the time they arise through trial and appeal. Mike has particular education and experience in the area of federal and state tax litigation and planning. He represents clients in all manner of issues before the IRS and state tax authorities including audits, disputing proposed additions to tax, disputing penalty assessments, innocent spouse relief, offers in compromise, installment plans, and other tax collection disputes. Mike litigates those same issues in the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. District Courts, Utah State Courts, and in both federal and state Courts of Appeals. Mike also assists clients in disputes related to all manner of financial transactions, including those involving securities, equity and debt investments, asset securitization and other structured transactions, shareholder and partner disputes, and other financial contracts. Mike has litigated financial transaction cases involving claims ranging from simple breach of contract to breach of fiduciary duty to fraud and mishandling of assets. Mike’s practice areas also include real estate litigation, insurance litigation, and banking litigation. Mike has extensive experience representing clients in mediations, trials, arbitrations, injunctions, temporary restraining orders, actions for declaratory relief and appeals in state and federal courts, including the Utah Supreme Court and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Mike has a Masters of Accounting in Taxation, and earned an LL.M in taxation with distinction from Georgetown University and his Juris Doctor, Order of the Coif, in 2001, from the University of Utah.
