Biography

Kimberly Erwin attended Bishop Verot High School and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2006, after attending Florida State University and Florida Gulf Coast University, graduating cum laude with a B.S. in Forensic Psychology. Honors included Moot Court Honor Society, Phi Alpha Delta, the Family Law Clinic and the Order of the Barristers Award. After graduating from Nova Southeastern University School of Law, she began her practice in insurance defense and criminal law. As a prosecutor, Kimberly gained extensive trial experience and became the court chief of the juvenile division and head of the special victims unit, prosecuting cases involving human trafficking, homicide, child abuse, domestic violence, injunctions and sexual assaults. Some of these were high profile cases that received notice in local newspapers. Her legal career has focused on helping children and families, through collaboration with DCF, law enforcement and other governmental agencies. Kimberly has been involved in organizations such as Calusa Inns of Court, the Association of Family Law Professionals, the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association, the Hendry-Glades Bar Association, and the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. When not working at Thompson Family Law, Kimberly can be found enjoying the beach, spending time with friends and family and cooking all natural foods.

Q. My mother has court ordered visits of one of my daughters, with the rise of Covid again, I'm not comfortable with it
A: I don’t know that you can. If the court order was entered after the start of the pandemic, you most likely need to allow visits. If it was entered previous to the pandemic, I would suggest requesting masks (as well as your other requests) be worn in writing. If they refuse, I would document the refusal and go see a lawyer. You will most likely need to allow visits but can ask a judge to order health and safety precautions be taken during the visits. You don’t want to be seen as trying to use the pandemic as an excuse to refuse visits. This is especially true since you’re allowing other family members to visit. Good luck!
Q. i have a closed cps case but still have 2 visits n phone calls but the kids live with there dad n he cut me off
A: While it depends on how your case was closed and what local practice customs suggest, I recommend keeping a log of your attempts to see the children and your attempts to set up visits via the case worker. After documenting several of these attempts, talk to a lawyer about filing a motion to get a set schedule or at least more cooperation.
