Avoiding high hourly rates and client conflicts, John R. Crossan left a big law firm and founded his solo IP practice in the Chicago Loop area, continuing to serve businesses, institutions, and individuals in patent, trademark, copyright, and allied areas of the Intellectual Property Law fields, incuding litigation, negotiations, procurement of rights, counseling, and licensing of rights. In November 2011 his office moved to North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, in a shared law office space with good support and community.

John R. Crossan joined the newly-formed IP practice to provide his litigation and Intellectual Property skills to the financial industry clients of the firm. He obtained at Chapman apparently just the second-issued "pure" US business method patent, on a crop insurance method for protecting GMO technology. He continued his litigation, prosecution, and counseling practice for clients of the firm as well as his own roster of business, institutional, and individuals.
