Biography

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Haruka (Hannah) worked as a staff attorney at the Maine Community Law Center (MCLC). MCLC was a non-profit law firm dedicated to increasing access to justice by providing low cost legal services to Mainers of modest means. The lawyers at MCLC practiced law in a variety of fields. Hannah provided legal services focusing on the areas of simple estate matters and family law including divorce, parental rights and responsibilities, and protection from abuse and harassment.

Hannah will always consider western Maine to be “home.” Half of Hannah’s family lives in Oxford county and the other half lives in Japan. In 2010, Hannah graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in biology. After having worked in banking and as a legal assistant, law school was the clear next step.

Hannah attended the University of Maine School of Law, where she took a number of classes in transactional law and estate planning. She spent significant time volunteering with the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, and in the summer of her 2L year she worked as an extern at the Federal Trade Commission’s office at Cleveland, Ohio. Hannah takes consumer protection issues seriously and advocates for people to have a full understanding of what their rights and obligations are before committing to a contract or service. Hannah graduated from Maine Law cum laude in May, 2018. Prior to working for the Maine Community Law Center, Hannah volunteered at the Volunteer Lawyers Project and has committed well over 50 hours to pro bono work.
