Biography

Mr. Barnett has devoted his entire career to representing individuals and families in personal injury and wrongful death matters. Mr. Barnett’s successes include settlements and/or verdicts of at least $1 million or more in cases involving trucking collisions, dog attacks, funeral home and crematory negligence, medical malpractice, premises liability, deck collapses, and automobile collisions.

Given his litigation successes, Mr. Barnett was inducted into the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum & The Top Trial Lawyers in America. This prestigious honor is reserved for lawyers who have been lead counsel in cases that resulted in verdicts and/or settlements of greater than $2 million. Fewer than 1% of lawyers in America are inducted into this organization. To date, Mr. Barnett’s biggest result involves an eight-figure confidential settlement obtained in a trucking accident case.

Mr. Barnett is also repeatedly named a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers, a “Top 40 Under 40” lawyer for the state of Alabama by the National Trial Lawyers, and a “Top Attorney” by B-Metro Magazine. In addition to his work in the courtroom, Mr. Barnett advocates for the rights of the injured by serving on the board of directors for the Emerging Leaders caucus for the Alabama Association for Justice. He is also a member of the American Association for Justice and the Southern Trial Lawyers Association.

Mr. Barnett joined the firm in 2014, after initially practicing at a small plaintiff’s personal injury firm after law school. He was named a partner at Belt, Bruner & Barnett, P.C. in 2019. Born and raised in Florence, Alabama, he earned a B.S. in Economics, summa cum laude, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in just three years. He then earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2012.

Mr. Barnett and his wife are blessed with two beautiful daughters, and he enjoys spending time with his family when away from the office.

Q. What is a civil suit and how do i find out who is filing the suit?
A: A civil law suit is an action seeking monetary damages or equitable relief (like an injunction ordering an individual or entity to do/refrain from doing a particular act). Typically, monetary damages is the primary relief sought in a civil law suit. If you are sued, you will be served with a copy of the complaint and summons. Those documents will inform you of the nature of the suit and the party/parties bringing suit against you.
Q. IS THERE A TORT CAP ON AWARDS TO A SUCCESSFUL PLAINTIFF IN A REAR END COLLISION BY A ALABAMA POLICE CRUISER
A: Yes. Pursuant to Ala. Code 11-93-2, the recovery of damages against a governmental entity is limited to $100,000.00 for bodily injury or death of an individual in any single occurrence. You should speak with a local personal injury attorney immediately as special time restrictions generally apply to plaintiffs seeking damages from governmental entities.
