Biography

At the Claire Edwards Law Firm, we focus on family law tailored to each client's needs. Whether the client needs ex parte emergency custody or is simply finalizing a divorce after having lived separate and apart for several years, we are happy to help handle your legal matter.

We believe in legal excellence and focus on getting the best outcome for each client. We keep clients in the loop during the course of court proceedings, and whenever clients call, they are likely to have a chance to speak with an attorney promptly.

Divorce and custody is a very emotional and trying time in a person's life. Therefore we make the legal process as exacting as possible so the client can spend their time focusing on their emotions and healing. We are in the business of helping people.

About me: I have been admitted to practice law since 2012, and I served as a judicial law clerk after law school. I started my own practice in 2013 and worked part time while I held other full time positions, until, in 2015, I was able to start my own business full time. Since 2015, I've handled numerous family law cases, and I've worked every week on misdemeanor cases. I've also litigated business law cases, completed contract review, and handled personal/work injury cases. I am committed to serve my clients with compassion and empathy. Each client is different, and I tailor each client's case to their needs.

Q. How do I start a succession?
A: Start with an attorney who focuses on "successions." You'll need to know whether your brother died with a will or without a will. You'll also need to talk with your brother's children and find out what's going on with them.

You can check the clerk of court in the parish where the house is located to see if anything has been filed against the property- check the actual civil suits for the executory action (foreclosure) and check the mortgage/conveyance records to see if any liens have been filed against the property.

Ultimately, you'll end with an attorney who focuses on successions and who can complete the judgement of possession, putting your brother's house in the right hands. ... Read More
Q. I am from Louisiana. If I buy a house and leave my spouse off the mortgage and title..would my spouse get half of it?
A: You need to talk in depth with your realtor, your mortgage broker, and your title attorney. They are fully capable of getting you the outcome you desire. A family law attorney can help illustrate the possible outcomes.

As a short-and-dirty answer to this question: "I'm married and I buy a house. Somehow I manage to not list my spouse on the deed/title and somehow I manage to not list my spouse on the mortgage. Is it community property?"... When a married person buys a house with community funds or using a mortgage/note, the house and the note are considered community property. There are exceptions, such as documents where a non-purchasing spouse agrees the house is separate property or where a non-purchasing spouse agrees the mortgage/note is separate property. ...
